Text Box:      The Marine Corps uses simulation for both training and retention requirements.  The USMC established its Modeling and Simulation Office (MCMSMO) in 1995.  This department consists of various programs which includes a simulation section.
The MCMSO divides it program into five areas: programs that support live training, constructive simulation,  virtual simulation, schoolhouse only programs, and visionary concepts.  One major component of its virtual simulation is its PC Game-Based Simulator or Infantry Tool Kit (ITK). An example of an ITK simulation is the Virtual Battlefield System-1 (VBS1).
The VBS1 is a fully interactive, three dimensional training application providing a premium synthetic environment which small unit tactics may be practiced among team members.  VBS1 is a PC-based program, and runs on Pentium stand alone or network PCs. VBS1 is not available for commercial retail, but can be purchased through the DOD and federal programs.  Advantages of the VBS1 is that it can support multiple players, and incorporates different scenarios, smoke, and sound effects.  Furthermore, there are several add on packages that allow units to train on MOUT systems and Law Enforcement.  A program that specifically deals with anti-terrorism is in the works.
Today the USMC utilizes commercial programs as well - such as the "First to Fight" program. This is a tactical first-person shooter in which one leads a four man team in close quarter combat.  The game was developed with the assistance of 40 Marines, with experience in the Middle East.  It incorporates "Ready-Team Fire-Assist", which provides the team with 360-degree security, and models movement in accordance with Marine doctrine.  Game platforms include: PC, XBOX, and Play station.  Lastly, First to Fight is the first military shooter that incorporates human will.  In other words, the game calculates human morals and characteristics as it progresses.
